A Sculpture by Timothy Schmalz
Homeless Jesus is a sculpture cast in bronze metal made by artist Timothy Schmalz. Measuring 36 inches in height, 84 inches in length, and 24 inches in depth, it provides enough room for a person to sit onto. The sculpture shows a figure of a man lying on its side on a bench, shrouded in a blanket; its uncovered feet show wounds similar to that of Jesus Christ’s nailed feet indicating that the man in the figure is Christ Himself. The sculpture signifies Jesus Christ’s embodiment of the most marginalized in society.
Installed in many landmarks around the world, the Homeless Jesus sculpture has “found a permanent place” in the country’s Premier Church, the Manila Cathedral. On April 9, 2022, at 7:30PM, Manila Cathedral Rector Fr. Reginald Malicdem and Vice Rector Fr. Kali Pietre Llamado will be giving their reflections on the meaning of the image in today’s context.
On April 10, 2022, Palm Sunday, the Homeless Jesus sculpture will be unveiled and blessed by His Eminence, Jose F. Cardinal Advincula before the celebration of the 10:00 AM Holy Mass at the Manila Cathedral Patio. With its timely unveiling and blessing on this year’s celebration of Palm Sunday, the sculpture will be of help for the Catholic faithful’s reflection during Holy Week.
